Root of desire are Vasanas which is associated with the Causal body. When taken in macrocosm it is maya and avidya at the level of the individual. This non-apprehension is timeless, hence inexplicable. Vasanas are increased with our contact with the world, it may be sattvic (pure), rajasic (activity) or tamasic (indolent) and our actons are based on what kind of vasanas or impressions of experience we store in our personality (causal body)
