Fearlessness: A divine characteristic

Religious Philosophies and ConceptsUniversal Values and MoralityIndigenous Traditional Wisdom

In chapter 16, Lord Krishna describes about personality development. There are numerous centres imparting personality development classes. The modules and syllabus explain about the facets described by Lord Krishna to Arjuna. The divine fact is that once a person embraces the principles enshrined in Bhagvad Geeta then his/her personality would gradually be transformed and the person would get elevated to the highest standard of divinity.

In the chapter, Lord Krishna exposits to Arjuna about the existence of righteous and divine characteristic in a human being which defines his/her overall personality. The first aspect HE mentioned was Abhayam means fearlessness. Fearlessness or audacity is a trait that enables a person to face any difficult circumstance. In one’s life span, a person encounters several a tornado of unbearable distress. The tormented circumstance can be of monetary scarcity, household skirmishes, health hazards, unemployment or any other incapacitation. Under such deplorable circumstance, one needs to possess the weapon of fearlessness to combat the adversity. It has been seen that in the deficiency of audacity and fortitude, one becomes vulnerable and decides to take the extreme step of committing suicide thereby desecrating GOD’s endowment; a human life.

The human life has been given by GOD and only HE has the prerogative to decide upon the condition of a life. As Lord Krishna has mentioned in Chapter seven:

वेदाहं समतीतानि वर्तमानानि चार्जुन |
भविष्याणि च भूतानि मां तु वेद न कश्चन ||
vedāhaṁ samatītāni vartamānāni chārjuna
bhaviṣhyāṇi cha bhūtāni māṁ tu veda na kaśhchana

“I know what occurred in the past, what is happening in present, what will transpire in future and I also know all living beings; but no one knows me”.

Lord Krishna’s statement that HE knows about everyone’s future gives a clear inference that the tenure of one’s birth and death is decided and demarcated by HIM. Therefore, even the thought of suicide is blasphemous. In chapter eleven when Arjuna sees the universal form of Lord Krishna, he saw even the future in that one divine body. According to Lord Krishna, timidity can never be Godly and withering under the pressure of taxing circumstances would be a quality that is degrading and does not elevate the person to the level of divinity. On the contrary, a person carrying courage and gumption to combat the vicissitudes of life is a personality with a divine characteristic called Abhayam .

Fearlessness is a result of faith in oneself and faith in GOD
