Glimmers

Lifestyle and TraditionsEveryday LifeRest and Rejuvenation

The term ✨glimmers✨ was coined by Deb Dana, a clinical social worker and expert in Polyvagal Theory. Our nervous systems are designed to constantly scan for signs of safety or danger. While triggers activate our fight-or-flight response, glimmers engage the part of our nervous system responsible for calming us down and helping us feel secure. By recognizing these positive signals, we help regulate our emotions and support our body’s natural healing process. Here are a few examples of common glimmers:

Sunlight filtering through the trees on an afternoon walk.

The sensation of a soft blanket as you curl up to rest.

A kind word from a stranger or loved one.

These small moments, though fleeting, can have a profound impact on how we feel. They’re a reminder that beauty and peace are always within reach, even on the hardest days.

How to Find Glimmers in Your Daily Life

🌟 Slow Down: Often, we miss glimmers because we’re moving too quickly. Try to slow down and open your senses to the world around you. Take a deep breath, and notice what you feel, see, hear, or smell.

🌟 Stay Present: Mindfulness helps us experience life in real-time. When you’re fully present, you’re more likely to catch those fleeting moments that make you feel good.

🌟 Reflect: After your day, reflect on whether you had any glimmers. They might be easy to overlook, but once you start noticing them, you’ll see them more frequently.
