The Gita made a profound influence on the nationalist leadership. It influenced Lokmanya Tilak (1856-1920), Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), and Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950), all as they struggled for India's independence. Introduced to it at an early age, each one of them had an occasion to deepen their understanding of it in prison. Of them, Tilak was the oldest and he wrote his magnum opus, the Gita Rahasya in 1907 while he was serving a six-year prison term in Mandalay.
