Shamanic Journey Drumming by Michael Drake - YouTube

Indigenous Practices Beats, Sound and Instruments

Try a Shamanic Journey listening to Michael Drake's "Shamanic Journey Drumming."

Shamanic drumming is drumming for the purpose of shamanic journeying. Researchers have found that when a drum is played at an even tempo of three to four beats per second, most people can journey successfully even on their first attempt. Shamanic drumming awakens your innate ability to commune with your inner self and retrieve information. Your inner self is in constant communication with all aspects of your environment, seen and unseen. You need only journey within to find answers to your questions.

You should always journey with a purpose or question. Reflect for a moment on the purpose of your journey, and then close your eyes. Focus your attention on the sound of the drum and feel yourself being carried away by the sound. If for any reason you want to return, just retrace your steps back. You will hear a call back signal near the end of the video, followed by a short period of slow heartbeat drumming to assist you in refocusing your awareness back to your physical body. Sit quietly for a few moments, and then open your eyes.

After the journey, you must then interpret the meaning of your trance experience. In some cases, your journey experiences will be clear and easy to understand. At other times, your journey may be dreamlike and full of symbolism. Interpret such journeys as you would any dream. Look for possible associations related to each symbol or image. The key is to observe whatever happens without trying to analyze the experience. Like developing any skill, journeying takes practice. Nothing may happen on your first journeys. You may only experience darkness. When this happens, simply try again at a different time. Step-by-step instructions for making shamanic journeys are explained in Michael Drake's book, The Shamanic Drum: A Guide to Sacred Drumming: http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Drake/e/B001KC4ME2/

"I first heard Michael's shamanic drumming in 1993 at the Earth and Spirit conference in Portland, Oregon. His drumming had a hypnotic, trance-inducing effect on the audience. His CD entitled Shamanic Journey Drumming is equally powerful and can be used for both individual and group shamanic experiences."

"This is a very well done, easy to use sound guide to a shamanic journey. It consists of nothing but drumming or drumming with a rattle and a call back for each session."

"I highly recommend this album to anyone interested in shamanic journeying. The driving beat, rich acoustics and overtone harmonics readily induce the altered states necessary for making shamanic journeys. The companion book The Shamanic Drum is also recommended reading."

"Wow, I purchased this after meeting a friend a long the path who gave a book on Animal wisdom after he had seen my carved owl plugs. And since then I have explored journeying. This album was great through my Qc3's, but when I played it through my JBL 6" studio monitors in my home studio, WOW!!!THE TONE!! after 7 min I had to stop it the fullness and vibrations were overwhelming. As an musician and appreciator of music you can feel Well done Michael Drake!!!"
